Frequently Asked Questions About First Time (Tandem) Skydiving at Skydive Dubai Palm Drop Zone.
- Why should I choose Skydive Dubai?
Skydive Dubai is truly unique. The location, staff, equipment, aircraft and safety record are at the cutting edge of the sport. We average over 100,000 skydives each year and are recognized as one of the premier skydiving facilities worldwide. Jumping from 13,000ft with almost a full minute of free fall and approximately 5 minutes under the parachute, you’ll have plenty of time to take in the breathtaking views of the Palm Jumeirah, and the impressive Dubai skyline!
- Is skydiving safe?
As with any adventure sport, skydiving has an element of risk. However, we minimize this risk by using state-of-the-art training and equipment. Each student parachute is equipped with an automatic activation device, which automatically deploys your parachute for you in the unlikely event that you or your instructor is not able to.
All of our skydiving instructors have undergone rigorous selection, training and certification and all student parachutes are packed and maintained under Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Rigger supervision. Our impressive fleet of aircraft is maintained to the very highest standards. Your safety really is our primary concern!
- How long is the training?
You’ll receive a 10-minute briefing from your instructor. You will have ample opportunity to ask any questions you may have.
- Will I be scared?
It is normal to be apprehensive about jumping from an airplane. The airplane ride to altitude is typically where most students feel the most anxiety, but few jumpers report feeling anything, but exhilaration once they’ve left that door! Lots of people who say they have a fear of heights quite happily take up skydiving.
- How fast will I fall?
Free fall is typically about 120 miles per hour. Once you’re under an open parachute, your rate of descent decreases to about 10 miles per hour.
- What Does It Feel Like?
We cannot describe the unique sensations you will feel, but we will tell you that it will be your most exhilarating experience yet! The sensation of free fall is more like flying than falling and is intensely exciting and liberating. Jumpers do not experience vertigo or the dropping sensation sometimes experienced on rollercoasters. The flight under canopy is peaceful and relaxing.
- Can I breathe in free fall?
Absolutely! Relax and breathe normally, its just air up there!
- What if my parachute doesn’t open?
In the unlikely event that the main parachute fails to open properly, there is always a secondary or reserve parachute. On a tandem skydive your tandem instructor will handle this process should it be needed. All main parachutes are packed under Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) rigger supervision. All reserve parachutes are packed only by FAA certified riggers who have received certification from the FAA to inspect, pack and repair parachutes. Every reserve parachute is re-packed every 180 days, whether they are used or not. Skydive Dubai has full time FAA certified riggers on staff.
- How hard is the landing?
We use only modern “square” parachutes at Skydive Dubai and this type of parachute allows excellent maneuverability and tiptoe landings! On a tandem skydive you and your instructor will land your ‘parachute built for two’ together on our grassed landing area.
Listen to your tandem instructor, as they will instruct you before and during your skydive on what you should do from exiting the plane, when you are under canopy and during the landing.
- Can my friends and I be in the same plane?
Skydive Dubai is always keen to accommodate groups! We have large aircraft and lots of instructional staff and can usually accommodate your wishes to jump as a group. (And, as you’ll see on the booking page, discounts for those who make a reservation at the same time.) There are factors that will affect how many people can go in the plane at one time so please contact us ahead of time at email@example.com if you wish to jump as a group and we will do our best to accommodate your wishes!
- What are the age requirements?
You must be at least 18 years of age to make a tandem skydive. Valid Photo ID is required. There is no upper age limit. Our oldest tandem student to date was 82 years old!
- What are the physical requirements?
For tandem skydiving the weight and Body Mass Index (BMI) limits are as follows:
Ladies: Less than 198lbs/90kg; maximum BMI 27.5
Gents: Less than 220.5lbs/100kg; maximum BMI 30.0
For safety reasons we cannot make any exceptions and your weight and your BMI will be checked when you arrive.
On the day you check-in and you do not meet our physical requirements, you can move your reservation date to a new one and try again.
If you have ear or sinus problems, experience seizures, fainting spells or have a weak heart, you should not be jumping.
If you are in any doubt, please check with your doctor. A doctors note may be required if you have any kind of medical condition. If you have EVER had a shoulder dislocation we will require written permission from your doctor before you can skydive.
- Can I wear prescription glasses or contact lenses during skydive?
No problem! Just let your instructor know that you wear them.
Please note no sunglasses are allowed during your skydive.
